To the Editor.—
The recent article by Hershel Jick, MD, et al, "Vaginal Spermicides and Congenital Disorders" (1981;245:1329), raises a distressing question. I am concerned that I believed for many years that vaginal spermicides were completely innocuous. Perhaps, wishing to continue in that vein, I have thought of the following question.Women who have medical problems such as diabetes, which is associated with an increase in congenital disorders, are also more likely to use vaginal spermicides. I am wondering if Dr Jick's group looked at maternal illnesses in the two groups of patients in his group.
