Abstract

In Reply.—  The failure of reliance on authority is precisely what has happened, historically, to provoke alternate explanations of the derivation of os sacrum. Variant meanings of words, well-known through the ages, have culminated in Lewis Carroll's dictum from Alice in Wonderland: " 'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.'
