Dr Gordon Avery has continued to provide excellence in the third edition of this text on neonatology with the addition of several new chapters and also significant revisions of other major chapters that had been included in previous editions.

The section on the fetal patient has been enhanced with the addition of the chapters "Ultrasonography and Perinatal Medicine" by Dr Manning and "Prenatal Diagnosis" by Drs Evans and Schulman. Unfortunately, in the same section, the chapter that had been previously written by Drs Hon and Koh devoted to fetal monitoring has been eliminated. Although certain aspects of fetal heart-rate monitoring are discussed in other sections, a concise presentation of the use and interpretation of fetal heart-rate monitoring, so necessary for the neonatologist, has been omitted. The chapter on extreme prematurity by Dr Usher is again well presented and provides a thoughtful approach to the infant with very low birth weight.
