Old hormones reveal new surprises 

Angiotensin in the brain?  It looks like the kidney is better acquainted with the brain than we thought.Physiologists have found that all components of the renin-angiotensin system, a group of systemic peptides produced by the kidney that play a major role in regulating blood pressure (BP), are also produced and released within the brain. In addition, one group has demonstrated that there is a CNS pathway that influences renin secretion by the kidney independent of any effect on BP.At the recent Society for Neuroscience meeting in Atlanta, current research related to these findings was presented and the possibility raised that the renin-angiotensin system may be a link between distressful psychological stimuli and the development of essential hypertension.Several components of this system have been measured in brain homogenates.
