More on the Food and Nutrition Board report

Abstract

The Food and Nutrition Board's recent controversial report—cautioning against overestimating the power of diet to prevent disease—will be reviewed and expanded, according to Alfred E. Harper, PhD, chairman of the 15-member board.

Even before the present report was issued, says Harper, it was planned to follow it up with a more extensively documented version, revised as necessary to incorporate any new data that might become available.

Harper also says that "reaction to the [present] report on the part of much of the communications media, several 'food advocate' organizations, and a number of public health groups was vituperative."

The Food and Nutrition Board, part of a division of the National Research Council-National Academy of Sciences (NAS), issued its "Toward Healthful Diets" report May 28. The proposed review and expansion of the report will require about three years.
