Bluestone has edited an excellent discussion of the many phases of rheumatology, prepared by his associates at the University of California Medical School at Los Angeles. This book is the first of a series titled Postgraduate Medicine for the Internist prepared under the aegis of the Department of Continuing Education.

It is clear that this initial volume was not planned to compete with the two standard encyclopedic texts: McCarty DJ, Hollander JL: Arthritis, 1979; or Cohen AS: Rheumatology and Immunology, 1979 (JAMA 1979;243:1953). The approach to diagnosis and treatment is practical and designed primarily for management of patients with joint complaints seen in the office, where most problems in this vast field of medicine are handled. The five-minute rheumatologic examination, an important initial step in diagnosis and treatment, is clearly described and well illustrated.
