Salmeterol Xinafoate in Asthma-Reply

Abstract

In Reply.  —My Editorial notes that salmeterol provides more effective bronchodilation than albuterol in patients requiring maintenance therapy for asthma. The Editorial, however, goes on to state that salmeterol should not be used more than twice daily at recommended doses. The drug is approved only for use this way. The package insert1 for Serevent (salmeterol xinafoate) Inhalation Aerosol states: "Do Not Exceed Recommended Dose: The bronchodilator action of salmeterol usually lasts for at least 12 hours. Therefore, it should not be used more often than every 12 hours."1 The information in the package insert is very specific about how salmeterol should be used.As I stated in my Editorial, although salmeterol inhalation aerosol may be a major advance in our treatment protocol, physicians and patients must be educated never to use salmeterol to treat the acute symptoms of asthma.
