This 300 +-page overview of diving medicine is written with an emphasis on the sport scuba diver. Many of the authors who contributed chapters have extensive experience in the field and have either contributed to or been extensively cited in previous established diving reference texts, including The Physician's Guide to Diving Medicine, edited by Charles W. Shilling, and Diving and Subaquatic Medicine, edited by Carl Edmonds.

The book is well organized and has a somewhat novel classification by organ system of many of the diving disorders. Specific chapters on ear and sinus pathology, pulmonary problems, and the cardiovascular system allow a rapid appreciation of the unique aspects of diving medicine. The basic chapters on "Physiology and Physics," "Basic Diving Equipment," and "Mechanisms of Diving Injury" are particularly lucid and serve as an excellent foundation in dive medicine physiology. The book itself makes interesting reading for the diving and nondiving physician
