Abstract

It is a pleasure to review and recommend an excellent book on the thyroid and parathyroid glands.

This is a comprehensive clinical text rather than a surgical text. There are many authors from other specialties, some from other countries, and some of America's most thoughtful general surgeons. Indeed, the text can be faulted for slighting the importance of specific surgical techniques.

The writing is excellent. There is little repetition. Carcinogenesis, pathogenesis, and endocrine relationships are well covered. There is a good chapter on needle-aspiration biopsy from Sweden. Summary tables are excellent in most chapters. Noteworthy, however, is the dearth of data from randomized or even reasonably controlled studies and the preponderance of data from personal studies of selected patients.

This is a superb book for students, residents, and all nonendocrinologists who require a quick review and pertinent current references.
