—In the letter from Lisa J. Cardo, MD, "Human Factor IX for the Treatment of Hemophilia B" (JAMA 1991;266:794), published August 14,1991, Dr Cardo called for purified human factor IX to become available. Unknown to Dr Cardo and the editors, such a preparation (Alpha Nine, Alpha Therapeutic Corporation, Los Angeles, Calif) was licensed on December 31,1990, and became available in February 1991. This was after Dr Cardo had treated her patient and written the case report.
