—There are at least two alternatives to Dr Chan's1 exquisite "modest proposal": (1) some of Chan's "women with no health problems" may renounce "their status as potential patients," thus creating a vow of a different kind; or (2) a physician may get married "before initiating a genuine dating or romantic relationship"!An optimist is one who believes the future is uncertain. Ethical dilemmas, of course, remain, but they are transformed into those resolvable by individuals rather than by the "conclusions" of councils.
