Abstract

This book is a collection of review articles dealing with basic and clinical subjects related to the stomach. The approach is multidisciplinary with the participation of authors with backgrounds in anatomy, pathology, cell biology, epidemiology, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, internal medicine, and surgery. Although there is limited cross-referencing, the review articles are exsentially independent of each other. The general format emphasizes the authors' own work or experience and summarizes, usually quite thoroughly, the literature in the field. The references are extensive, pertinent, and current. The illustrative material is sufficient and clear.

Recent advances, which are presented in appropriate detail, emphasize Helicobacter pylori infections, H2 antagonists, proton pump inhibitors, and endoscopic techniques to control bleeding. Older knowledge is updated to comply with current information. The clinical chapters generally stress medical over surgical management.
