You Must Be Dreaming is written by a former patient of Dr Jules Masserman, a prominent and powerful psychiatrist. Dr Masserman is past president of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and honorary president for life of the World Association for Social Psychiatry. The book, written by Barbara Noel with Kathryn Watterson, documents psychiatric treatment that can only be characterized as the malicious abuse of power.
Ms Noel is a singer and composer who first sought help from Dr Masserman in 1966 with complaints of marital difficulties and performance anxiety. Trusting this world-renowned psychiatrist and believing she was involved in a normal therapeutic relationship, she describes years of treatment marked by violations of the most basic principles of appropriate psychiatric care.
