This is the story of a beloved country doctor who meets with an injury, is accused of a terrible crime and disappears from the community in which he lived. The death-bed confession of the real criminal, and a long and successful quest to find a mysterious "city by a lake" in South America, involving many perilous adventures, result in clearing up the mystery and restoring the doctor, who was innocent of all blame, to his wife and family. The book contains the views of the author on ethics and religion. It is a story about a physician, written by a physician, and should be interesting to physicians.
