There are many difficulties in the way of a really critical and searching review of a work of the scope of Modern Medicine. Thus, to cite only one difficulty, the number of different topics covered by Volume I is so large that it absolutely precludes the possibility of any one person being possessed of so diversified knowledge as to be entitled to express authoritative judgment on the manner of their presentation. The reviewer consequently must content himself with the attempt to point out the essential general features of the work in so far as they are disclosed by this volume, which is the first of seven. In the words of the publisher's note, it aims to place the present world knowledge in medicine at the command of all. Concerning the fitness of the editor of this system for his important task, there can be no question. It is, indeed, fortunate
