Dr. Gould says: "The largely increased demand for the 1897 Year-book leaves no doubt as to the usefulness of our work and of appreciation on the part of the profession. These facts have increased the endeavor of all concerned in the preparation of the volume for 1898 to bring it more nearly to our ideal of perfection. With the growing clearness of conception on the part of the editors of the exact nature of the professional need, there has been a corresponding recognition of the necessity of keeping the epitomization within the limits allotted to previous issues. The vast and increasing literature has this year rendered the task of the editors of especial difficulty; but we believe it has been more thoroughly carried out than ever before, despite the protests of most of the editors that any possible sins of omission must be charged to 'insufficient space,' and not to
