The first volume of this pretentious, unique, and important work is before us, and the impression one receives in examining this initial number is that the work when completed will be one of the most valuable publications of its nature that has been attempted in many years, completely covering, as it does, the whole range of medicine and surgery. For this reason it would seem that the title is hardly a correct one, unless it be understood that the word "Medica" is to be used in its old and broad sense. It is an attempt to furnish an authoritative medical and surgical work complete in itself, concise, practical, modern, and in such a manner that it can be easily referred to.
