Buprenorphine Implants and Opioid Dependence—Reply

JAMA. 2011;305(3):253-255. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1990

In Reply: Both letters suggest that it would be important to compare the efficacy of buprenorphine implants to sublingual buprenorphine. We agree, and such a study is currently under way to provide confirmatory information about the relative safety and efficacy of buprenorphine implants compared with placebo implants as well as with sublingual buprenorphine. We also agree that a study comparing the buprenorphine implant with a sustained-release naltrexone formulation would be of considerable clinical interest.
