Sun shawls through maple leaves
as if today were special—
the doctor removes the staples
that bind skin-fringes
over artificial bone. Jagged edges
have not yet healed over destiny's teeth.
You wear your scar
like an old soldier, limping
proudly from the hospital
with your newfound cane.
