Industry Response to the Obesity Threat

JAMA. 2011;305(4):361-362. doi:10.1001/jama.2011.20

To the Editor: We agree with Drs Koplan and Brownell1 in their Commentary that industry self-regulation and public-private partnerships can work in the public interest and promote health. However, we found the assertion in the opening line that the motive of the food and beverage industry in establishing public-private partnerships is “[t]o avoid public criticism and forestall government intervention” disingenuous in light of multiple recent calls for the industry to engage in partnerships in the prevention and control of obesity.2
