Lab Ethics Interactive

JAMA. 2011;305(12):1188. doi:10.1001/jama.2011.319

The fallout of undetected laboratory misconduct and the ways that it can be prevented are probed in an interactive movie created by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Research Integrity.

The Lab (http://ori.hhs.gov/TheLab) begins with a short movie describing how one postdoctorate fellow's fabrication of data leads to his laboratory being closed down and his university losing a substantial source of funding. But then viewers are given a chance to go back in time and try to alter the outcome by selecting one of the other characters, such as a fellow postdoctorate student or the laboratory's principal investigator, and selecting actions for those characters that might change the outcome.
