To the Editor:—
Your editorial "Toward Better Baby Burping" (JAMA190:540 [Nov 9] 1964), is more remarkable for that which it omits than for that which it includes. With x-ray films it is easy to demonstrate that the gastrointestinal tract of almost any 2-month-old infant can be made to fill rapidly with gas by the simple expedient of causing the baby to cry vigorously for a few minutes. For centuries parents have believed that babies cry "because they have gas." It's about time someone pointed out that the cause-and-effect relationships have been traditionally reversed in the minds of most adults, including learned doctors.
