These volumes represent a collection of original communications, interspersed with previously unpublished essays on the history of roentgenology, prepared by several eminent radiologists. The editor reproduces photographs of many early investigators, as well as drawings, illustrations of apparatus, facsimiles of letters and other material. The historical essays which salt the text are often interesting, but they are of uneven quality and in some instances primarily anecdotal. However, "Historical Notes on X-ray Plates and Film" is very well illustrated, as is the "History of Radiologic Journals," to single out two contributions.

The editor has painstakingly and laboriously located, selected, and coordinated the material. The illustrations are valuable, the interpretative essays helpful. No one would deny that the collection, translation, and reproduction of original documents is an appropriate occupation for an historian of radiology. On this basis, these books could be valuable reference works, containing much information difficult or impossible to obtain
