Abstract

The Astrup technique was used in the management of the acid-base abnormalities in four cases of pulmonary disease and in 20 cases of cor pulmonale in which arterial carbon dioxide pressure was increased, indicating severe respiratory acidosis. A complete knowledge of the acid-base alterations in pulmonary insufficiency is mandatory for the overall management of patients with pulmonary disease. The Astrup technique of determining acid-base alterations is dependable, rapid, and accurate.
