Although Meyer B. Marks disagrees with R. K. Winkelmann's explanation for these offensive stigmata, and offers another opinion, I myself agree with both! Further, yet another explanation has been omitted from the roster. Some years ago, an elegant lady drove in her fiacre along the main boulevard in Vienna. As she passed three gentlemen strolling arm in arm on this fine afternoon in the springtime, she smiled graciously upon them. After bowing, the first remarked to his friends, "Did you observe the bracelet she wore? That was a gift from me." The second man replied, "But the pendant upon her bosom I sent her!" The third remarked quietly, "And my gift was the rings under her eyes."
