Femoral head prostheses accompanied by tiny strain gauges have been successfully implanted in two patients for biomechanical studies of hip pain, a Swedish investigator reports.
The intramedullary prostheses have allowed Carl Hirsch, MD, and colleagues to record the direction and size of forces exerted on the femoral head. They also continue to serve the patients well, two years after surgery.
Dr. Hirsch, head of the Department of Orthopaedics, University of Gothenburg, recently delivered the biennial Arthur Steindler Award Lecture at a combined program of the Orthopaedic Research Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
