DIETARY AND SERUM CHOLESTEROL: A DIVERGENCE

Abstract

What are the effects of weight reduction upon serum lipids? Undisputed conclusions have not been reached in spite of numerous studies; some investigators report that weight loss is accompanied by a decline in serum lipid levels, others indicate that no change occurs, and at least one communication cites an increase in serum lipids! Galbraith, Connor, and Stone1 recently reported the results of a study designed to avoid some of the variables which may have been present in previous investigations. Subjects should be confined to a metabolic ward, where they may be carefully observed for extra food intake, because obese patients are reluctant to admit cheating. Dietary fat should be carefully controlled with regard to percent of calories as fat, fatty acid composition, and content of cholesterol in both control and treatment periods.
