This volume represents a relatively new type of medical publication, the symposium-sponsored monograph authored by a group of outstanding specialists in a particular field. Such books present up-to-date developments and indicate future trends of investigation. As such they are invaluable. The present book is an unusually fine example of the usefulness of this type of presentation. Its fourteen papers are logically arranged and cover all important phases of ovarian physiopathology. It provides an impressive demonstration of our continuously accruing knowledge. A generation hence, one may expect a volume devoted entirely to the vicissitudes of a single cell—the ovum.

The book, to some extent, suffers from the lack of continuity and complete coverage usually found in those produced by a single author. There is some duplication in text and illustration. For example, the effects of follicle-stimulating hormone are expounded repetitiously in several presentations and there are a number of almost identical
