This survey of somatic therapies covers a wide range from psychotropic drugs through insulin and electric shock to psychosurgery. The American reader will find much of the section on insulin and leukotomy mainly of historical interest; the chemotherapy section is current and offers a thoughtful approach to the use of drugs, alone or with psychotherapy.
