Correction to Book Review

JAMA. 2000;283(9):1213. doi:10.1001/jama.283.9.1213

In the review of The Physician and the Slave Trade: John Kirk, the Livingstone Expeditions, and the Crusade Against Slavery in East Africa (JAMA, October 6, 1999), a comparison of Dr Kirk and a fictional character should have read as follows: "While spared the self-destruction of Joseph Conrad's protagonist [Kurtz in Heart of Darkness], Kirk did contribute to Britain's enduring colonial presence in Africa."
