Medicare Spending

Kaiser Family Foundation
JAMA. 2015;313(1):19. doi:10.1001/jama.2014.17249

This Visualizing Health Policy provides an overview of Medicare spending, including information on Medicare’s share of the federal budget relative to other government programs (eg, Social Security), the distribution of Medicare spending by type of service, and projections of Medicare spending as a share of the budget and economy over the next decade and beyond. In recent years, Medicare spending has been growing at historically low rates and is projected to grow more slowly than private health insurance on a per-person basis over the next decade. Medicare continues to face financial challenges in the long-term, however.
