To determine if hypertonic saline reduces the rate of pulmonary exacerbations in younger patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), Rosenfeld and coauthors randomly assigned 321 infants younger than 6 years with CF to receive either 7% hypertonic saline or isotonic saline. In the related 5853, Dasenbrook and Konstan discuss new clinical end points for early detection of regional lung disease.
