With the explosion of medical knowledge coupled with the advances in diagnostic and therapeutic technology (ie, an increased reliance on multimodality imaging, catheter-based treatments, and information technology), the field of cardiovascular medicine has changed dramatically. New educational formats for our fellowship programs must be developed to adapt and keep pace with (1) the rapid changes in knowledge and practice and (2) a new generation of learners. This Viewpoint explores the major differences in training between the past and the present for cardiovascular fellows and addresses the challenges that they face now and in the future with regard to their education.
