Medicine does not exist in a vacuum. A pristine white coat can cover up naked ambition. The search for universal truths can be led astray by racism, bigotry, and jingoistic hubris. Perhaps no story in the history of medicine illustrates these sorry truths better than that of Emil Abderhalden and his amazing, imaginary defense enzymes.
