This incredible but true story started on Saturday, August 21, 1999, when I was at Sea World near San Antonio, Tex, with my family. It was a hot afternoon (104°F), and to cool off, we all went swimming at the aquatic park. Because of a previous bout with skin cancer, I wore my usual hat with a large brim. Of the hundreds of bathers, one other person also was wearing a big hat. As I was wading out of the pool, my path took me near this big-hat-wearing person, a young woman probably about half my age. I pointed to my hat and said something dumb like "it is a good day for a little shade!" She agreed, and I walked on past her on my way back to our chairs. I had gone but a few steps when my guardian angel with the big hat caught up with me and tapped me on the shoulder. She said "I am a dermatologist, and you have a spot on your back that should be checked!"
