New Sunscreens and the Precautionary Principle

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is presently considering1 whether to permit the use of 8 new ultraviolet (UV) radiation filters into sunscreen products available to the American public. These ingredients include the broad-spectrum UV radiation filters Tinosorb S (BASF Care Creations) and Tinosorb M (BASF Care Creations) and Mexoryl XL (L'Oréal) and Mexoryl SX (L'Oréal), all 4 of which have been available in sunscreens sold in Europe for more than a decade.
