Thickened Plaques on the Hands—Diagnosis

Histologic examination revealed replacement of the superficial reticular dermis by thick collagen bundles arranged haphazardly in bandlike distribution. This region was relatively acellular (Figure 2) with loss of elastic fibers, and those that remained were degenerative (Figure 3). The papillary and lower reticular dermis were unaffected other than increased solar elastosis. These findings are consistent with a diagnosis of CEMPH.
