Melanoma Diagnosis by Computerized Analysis of Clinical Images

Arch Dermatol. 2001;137(3):377. doi:

We read with great interest the article by Andreassi et al1 and the accompanying editorial by Menzies.2 As have a number of other researchers3 (reviewed in Andreassi et al1 and Menzies2), members of our research team4 have been investigating the possibility of discriminating melanocytic nevi from melanomas by objective computerized image analysis (CIA) of various types of clinical images, including those obtained using dermatoscopy. The potential benefits of the application of CIA to this and a number of other medical problems are almost beyond calculation. However, the difficulties involved are also very great, and these new contributions are thus greatly appreciated.
