by Spencer David Kobren, 142 pp, $14.95, ISBN 0-8092-2488-7, Chicago, Ill, Contemporary Books, 2000.
This is one of the more credible members of a growing population of self-help hair-loss books. Spencer David Kobren, also host of a radio show about baldness, author of another similar volume aimed at men (The Bald Truth, Pocket Books, 2000), and director of an informational Web site (thebaldtruth.com), is on a mission to provide hope to the afflicted by demystifing androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and alopecia due to other causes and evaluating potential remedies. The breathless tone, beginning with the endless subtitles on the cover page ("What Really Works for Treating and Preventing Thinning Hair, The Facts About Hormonal and Other Causes, Treatments to Avoid, Drugs and Herbal Remedies That Really Work, The Latest Scientific Breakthroughs"), is accompanied by a sincere effort to provide the most accurate information he can.
