edited by André O. Barel, Marc Paye, and Howard I. Maibach, 888 pp, $235, ISBN 0-8247-0292-1, New York, NY, Marcel Dekker Inc, 2001.
The Handbook of Cosmetic Science and Technology edited by Barel, Paye, and Maibach is one of an excellent series of cosmetic industry texts published by Marcel Dekker Inc. This text is different from some of their other single-topic books, dealing with areas such as hair care, vitamin E, or sunscreens, in that it provides within a single book discussions including cosmetic safety considerations, cosmetic vehicles, cosmetic ingredients, cosmetic products, hair care products, cosmetic testing, and cosmetic claims. This is an extremely valuable resource for the dermatologist who works in industry or performs clinical testing for industry. It might be slightly laborious reading for the clinical dermatologist who is not familiar with cosmetic chemistry, yet it would provide an excellent background for understanding skin and hair care products.
