by Ramón L. Sánchez and Sharon S. Raimer, 681 pp, $45, ISBN 1-57059-496-1, Georgetown, Tex, Landes Bioscience, 2001.
Dermatopathology by Sánchez, Raimer, and their group of 7 coauthors is a welcome new addition to the Landes Bioscience "Vademecum" series of medical handbooks. The target audience is "residents of pathology and dermatology, and medical students with an interest in dermatology."
This excellently formatted, well-indexed, and portable book has a total of 23 chapters. The chapters are divided into sections, 63 altogether. Each section title is derived from a basic morphologic change (eg, hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis, and lichenoid dermatititis), and is usually followed by a simple definition of this change. Approximately 500 dermatologic conditions are discussed or mentioned in this book. The conditions that share a common basic morphologic change are grouped together in one section. No references have been included since the authors do not intend this book to be a reference text of dermatopathology. A useful glossary covering mainly inflammatory dermatologic entities can be found in the appendix toward the end of the book.
