The Textbook of Neonatal Dermatology is a sorely needed addition to the pediatric dermatology literature. Coauthored by Lawrence F. Eichenfield, Ilona J. Frieden, and Nancy B. Esterly, with the participation of 37 contributors, this first edition is divided into 27 chapters.
Although the book is intended for clinicians, its first several chapters provide an excellent introduction to the basic science aspects of the subject. They are very informative on the basic topics of fetal skin, the structure and function of newborn skin, and the skin of the premature infant. Chapter 5, called "Neonatal Skin Care and Toxicology," is devoted to the principles of infant skin care and the potential hazards of common topical preparations.
