Smoking Overlooked as an Important Risk Factor for Squamous Cell Carcinoma—Reply

Our article on SCC of the skin received media attention, including, for example, the national Swedish radio and regional Finnish newspapers.1 We are also glad that it was noticed by scientists. However, we disagree with the proposal of Dr Grant that the observed time trends were due to tobacco smoking. We do not want to consider whether tobaccosmoke is causing SCC of the skin, because the Ad Hoc Working Group of the International Agency for Research on Cancer refrained from making such a callin year 2002.2 Yet, the trends of smoking prevalence among Swedish men (peaking in the 1960s) and their lung cancerincidence (peaking around 1980) show no match to the continuously increasing incidence of SCC of the skin3 (see alsoother references in Li et al3).
