Abstract

The second edition of this manual, although amplified and revised, nearly approximates the first volume, which is no minor accomplishment in itself. The literary style, however, has been kept on the same informal, almost conversational, level which perhaps makes pleasant reading for the layman, but which is rather unusual in a reference text intended for medical students and practitioners.

The author has expressed his well-intentioned desire to simplify dermatologic nomenclature and has, indeed, made some attempts in that direction; however, the results achieved are sometimes open to question. For example, is the term ioderma preferable to iododerma, and necrobiosis granulomatosis more comprehensive than granulomatosis disciformis chronica et progressiva? It is the reviewers' opinion that the old, albeit cumbersome terminology with which we are familiar should be retained until such time when a universally accepted system of nomenclature is devised.
