To the skin diseases with intramelanotic lipid droplets listed in the March Archives (1980;116:301-306) by Ortonne et al, I would like to add the discoid skin lesion in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Methods and Results.—
Half of a biopsy specimen of a discoid lesion from the chest wall of a heavily pigmented Indian patient with SLE was processed and stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate and viewed with an electron microscope.Lipid droplets, usually multiple, were seen in the cytoplasm of most of the melanocytes in the basal layer (Figure). Most of the lipid droplets were discrete, although some were fused. There was no limiting membrane (Figure, inset), but there was peripheral condensation with a crenated rim. The largest diameters of the droplets ranged from 0.7 to 1.38 μm. The melanogenic activity of the cells appeared intact with the usual complements of fully melanized individual melanosomes,
