The Fifth International Conference on Behçet's Disease was held at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn, on September 14 and 15, 1989. This volume is a compilation of papers prepared by presenters at that conference. This fact is both the strength and weakness of this type of book. On the positive side, an impressive array of presenters represent a host of disciplines including dermatology, rheumatology, ophthalmology, immunology, microbiology, genetics, neurology, pathology, vascular medicine, surgery, internal medicine, epidemiology, oral medicine, and pediatrics. The manuscript does reflect participation from around the world, including the United States and North America, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. On the negative side, a clear overview of the complicated disease is less clearly portrayed than if the sections on diagnostic criteria and epidemiology, clinical features, etiology, and pathogenesis and treatment were written by one of a smaller group of authors.
