For many years, Rippon's Medical Mycology (WB Saunders Co, Philadelphia, Pa) has been the standard reference. The third edition was published in 1988, with the understanding that no more would follow. Now, a new book appears on the scene by K. J. Kwon-Chung and John E. Bennett that will invariably be compared with Rippon—and to the last edition of Medical Mycology by Emmons, Binford, Utz, and Kwon-Chung (Lea & Febiger, Philadelphia, Pa, 1977).
In some respects, the new work is a fourth edition of the book by Emmons et al but with much improved organization. Although many of the photographs are brought forward from the previous text, they are often rearranged, and new ones have been added where they are relevant. Many of the added photographs use scanning electron microscope technology. These show the details with great clarity, although they are sometimes not relevant to what is seen by the
