Thomas Eakins is today one of America’s most celebrated painters and considered by many to be the finest portrait painter this country has ever produced. He was known for catching his subjects at their truest moment. Eakins is often held aloft with the likes of Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau as exemplary examples of American culture. In his time, Eakins was a valued artist and teacher, despite his unorthodox behavior, until he pushed the lines of convention too far, and his career and life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, began to slip away from him.
