Portrait of a Genoese Noblewoman by Sir Anthony Van Dyck

Arch Facial Plast Surg. 2010;12(6):440-441. doi:10.1001/archfacial.2010.81

Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) is a well known master painter from the 17th century. He was born in Antwerp, in the Flemish region of Belgium, to a wealthy merchant family. His father was a leading cloth merchant who had 12 children, Anthony being the seventh. Maria Cuypers, Van Dyck's mother, died while giving birth to the 12th child. It was from her that Anthony Van Dyck seems to have inherited his artistic ability. She was known to have been extremely skilled at needlework, and the historical scenes that she created were considered masterpieces by the highest craftsmen.1(p19)
