We all know that art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth.—Pablo Picasso1

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is well known as one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century. Together with Georges Braque, Picasso created the style and genre of art described as cubism, in which perspective with a single viewpoint was abandoned and objects were represented as if they could be seen from several different positions simultaneously, using numerous lines and geometric shapes. He made arguably the most important contribution to the development of modern art in the 20th century, with virtually no artist escaping his influence.
